No, Thanks

Is there a place in the world you never want to visit? Where, and why not?

There is no such place (as of yet) that I despise, I want to travel everywhere and see new places, but there were times I felt that I felt I never want to go back there again. One such place is Kota, Rajasthan, India.

I spent grades 11 and 12 there, for preparing for all the prestigious engineering entrace exams of the country. What a joke. While I learned a lot and had both good as well as a bad time there (should be kind of obvious which weighed what), I don’t think I’ll ever want to go there.

And besides, I don’t want to visit a riot/war struck place either. Or somewhere where I might get mugged or killed.

Dystopia or Decadence?

Age of braindance decadence: We didn’t get rid of our problems, we multiplied them.

The above lines are taken from one of the world’s most interesting genres (and my favourite) cyberpunk. (more here)

Whatever is the case, that holds true. Not only for today but perhaps in the future too. I dare say definitely and it wouldn’t be too hard to find (most) people agreeing on it. After all, balance is what’s most important. Here thanks to this week’s writing challenge, for the first time (in either case) I’m thinking of the opposite of the dreamed utopia – dystopia.

ImageNow many of us love dystopian based settings (except my laptop/browser, which fails to recognize that word and suggests to me utopian) in books, movies, tv, video games and love watching our heroes (or was it the villain?) suffer (I was being modest, actually die).

Now this always begs me to question – what if our future actually turns out to be such a dystopian? (ironically, to me we are already doing great in that regard) And what does dystopian actually mean? Decline in the world, or really, decline in people, ourselves?

urlDogs. Always a man’s best friend. For eternity.

So you’re hit by a car tomorrow and, just like in the movies, they put you on ice and wait for medical science to make it possible to revive you at some point in the future. And revive you they do, some 20, 50, or 100 years later (any later than that is just cheating). Lo and behold you’ve woken up into your personal nightmare vision of the future. Tell us what it looks like.

So that’s the scenario. While a future version of yourself is an interesting (and very common-exploited-overly-used these days) topic, being your present self thrown in the future in perhaps the closest realistic way, and considering it to be on the dystopian side, how could it be?

  • Relationships: Does love still exist? Are people allowed to choose their own partners? Has the very idea of partnership been replaced by meditating about spoons? As far as I know, people can’t seem to grasp the concept of love (for the layman) today anyways. I personally think the union between people will prevail till the world ends, despite all treachery, lies and illusion. And If I have to talk about me personally, well I rather not say. 😛
  • Privilege: Are some people much better off than others, in terms of their freedom, opportunities, or daily lives? This is sadly also going to remain. Be it a better or (much) worse world, in cases it is required, but in most others as we know it’s unjust. This image just subtly sums it up.
  • 3787_427055664034331_1950340374_nMind control: Do people have the freedom to think for themselves? I already question that even today. I dare not even think about it. No I’m not talking about the problems by the ineffective governments all around the world, that is step 2. Step 1, people themselves.
  • Politics: Have conditions pushed the world in the direction of far-right fascism, wild anarchism, or opulent anything-goes liberalism? Or has politics been superseded altogether in the presence of giant brain eating cockroaches? Politics, something (along with Religion) which I will always have to think about before saying anything. Not that I’m not right, just that I prefer giant brain eating cockroaches.
  • Technology: Have we become more dependent on technology, or has it become useless? How does technology shape the experience of our everyday lives? Technology not just shapes our lies but the whole current world and that is just exponentially increasing everyday. I wouldn’t be surprised if we witness a cyberpunk world in the future. I don’t much believe in reincarnation, but I sure would like to witness it if not in this life. And in a way, at the same time, it is also leading to our disaster, which has already started. It’s only a matter of time when something good turns evil.
  • Environment: Have changes in the environment forced us to live in Hazmat suits, or are we all living in brain-wired fantasies of infinite pleasure? That meant like in the movie Inception. Not really.
  • Gender roles: Has the gender power balance shifted, drastically or less so, in one direction or another? This is a parallel to the aforementioned privileges, only difference being that the former in cases becomes necessary for the bigger picture, while here this is an absolute necessity of being in equality. I’m not going to comment on this, as I at times feel ashamed myself of being in the so called dominant male species. You might get what I mean.
  • Food, water, shelter: Has basic survival become an everyday struggle, or is the entire planet undergoing an obesity epidemic the likes of which we’d never have imagined? The way I see it, technology and this, we often focus on only about 30% of the earth’s current population in a way, the middle class complaining about how poor they are and the upper class getting all the privileges and opportunities of life because of wealth, while they themselves complain on the contrary how humanitarian they should be. What a fucking joke. Except all the sympathetic talks and so called charity and rural development going on, is there really progress? Not limited to worldly progress, but as compared to the ‘common’ people like us how we put it. That’s one of the reasons while I like WALL-E, it’s sort of rubbish. Except the most fortunate who haven’t realized or seen it yet, most of us are already are on survival mode.
  • Post-humanity: Are humans still “on top,” or is the planet now ruled by monkeys, robots, or *gasp* monkey robots? Cyborgs and zombies I tell ya!

Apart from some of the fears I’ve written so far, being a internet lover, a way of putting this fear would be this. Truly a dystopia, which I again fear has already begun.

First Light

Keeping a book aside while you sleep (unlike a cell phone) is a good suggestion. Although so far I had nothing interest of note, for today (in continuation of yesterday) my first thought which I could remember was pertained to the latest book I’m currently reading. Yesterday and the day before (ie my birthday) were quite interesting in relation with this, which I wrote a detailed post yesterday, which you can read here. Do let me know how you found my summary/coverage.

Also (in no relation) today is National Science Day 😀

Comedy of Errors

Murphy’s Law says, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.”

When I read today’s daily prompt, lot of random stuff came into my mind which went (sometimes horribly) wrong. Heck to be honest, the biggest irony is I had written a post for this, but when I went to hit publish, the auto-save was already going on and it went on for sometime until the page failed and my post was lost in the internet-oblivion. Was not in the drafts and this is the third time such a thing happening. Making a post with effort to only see it vanish. I think the internet-god is trolling/messing with me now.

Coming to the law itself, Murphy was not the first nor the only one to state saw. While I to some extent disagree, since for all mostly all all our problems we are responsible in a way or so no matter how unimaginably we believe otherwise, it still holds some amount of prophetical caution to it. To sum it up rather comically and shortly, this should do it.

The cake is a lie

Image

Those are some of the most famous words in video gaming, from the game Portal. You can’t yourself a gamer regardless of what and where you play if you haven’t played Portal.

Now coming to cakes, today is my (21st) birthday. I never wrote a post pertaining to my birthday, heck I never even celebrate(d). I do shit all the time anyways. An intersting conversation struck between me and a friend of mine, Mehul, who is a fellow big bat-fan. Today is also his birthday (so drop by and wish him too if you must) but unlike me he wasn’t aware of it. I sent him a text at midnight and he replied back with a thank you matey. After 1 AM or so, I got a call from him, and this happened:

Mehul: Hello sir.

Me: Hello sir.

Mel: Wish you many happy returns of the day!

Me: (after a brief silence) Wish you the same 😛

And we both burst laughing. It was quite a while since I had a hearty laugh over something silly such as this. Wishing people ‘same to you/wish you the same’ on festivals, occasions, exams and other days, this time I found someone to whom I could say that too. Actually there are two, him I already said and another fellow blogger friend. (I need to figure out how to embed tweets here now)

Now with that it, coming to the main topic:

ImageThe cake is a lie.

Now why is it so? I and Mehul later in the day had a chat asking what did we do. He said he was overdosed with cake. Cheese cake, cream cake, this cake, that cake… cake poisoning. And ironically I didn’t have a cake for months! As I said, birthdays don’t matter to me, I barely even remember it at times (and people barely call me too for that matter). But this did make me thinking. Why are birthdays and cake are so closely associated? Why not something else? This is one of those many clichés I fail to understand.

I don’t do anything special thanks to me and my not-so-at-times boring life, I had this glorious bucket yesterday if that matters.

ImageComing to today’s daily prompt, I think this should party give some answer. More later as I’ve got to attend a book launch event now and meet the awesome author 😀

Update: The book launch and subsequent event(s) were great. Have a look at the summary/coverage of them. These were 2 very interesting days and a memorable birthday indeed.

Cliché

Image

Clichés become clichés for a reason. Tell us about the last time a bird in the hand was worth two in the bush for you.

The most obvious problem with clichés is their overuse. While it is fun especially the first time of anything, it tends to become too much when too many people indulge in the same thing. The real problem here becomes of ingenuity, no creativity, lack of originality or simply becoming generic. But that’s not the only case.

Equally the problem is the rest of the lot, who complain. “Oh thats such a cliché”, that is equally common (or at times more) which can be seen. A recent example can be taken is of Valentine’s Day. How much people love to complain about it being so fake, this and that, just for it merely existing without much thought, by both singles and couples alike. I find that more amusing. Okay, I’m a bit guilty here too, but not without reason.

By complaining about clichés we are becoming the monster we bemoan.  Just like that example among countless others, there are (more) people complaining about them. That’s the real problem.

And as the title says, clichés are clichés for a reason. Well even if many don’t make sense, still. For one as I already said, simply because they are fun. Someone who visits the leaning tower of Pisa tends to take a photo as if he/she is ‘holding’ it. Couples kissing in front of the the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Or a similar looking phone tower for that matter. And this list goes on to eternity. If I ever visit a place of in such an event for the first time, I might tend to do it, or more probably not do it and do something different. Such things might lead to lack of originality but still doesn’t hurt.

ImageAnd in cases they hold a certain amount of truth too. Take the one in the title for example. A bird in the hand was worth two in the bush. A sound advice. Personally there times in my life where that held more sense and truth, but that was purely contextual and depended on the circumstance. But coming here, it’s ironic that in the world we live in, even advice has become a cliché and people just love to step ahead and give advice without even thinking or following it themselves. In the end, why care?

The only thing we can should do is just not overdo anything, and stop complaining about everything and let it pass. Time is the best answer (well in most cases), most things don’t last the test of time. Have fun keeping this in mind, and it can sometimes be useful too.

Buffalo Nickel

ImageSo going by today’s prompt, I looked in my withered wallet and randomly removed a coin from the small compartment which contained some coins. This was it, a new coin of Re 1 which I found, year being 2009. Which reminded me this is the first of the two changes of coins in the recent years. While the above pictured look best than the previous, with some nice different hand gestures in every coin denomination, the latest ones are dam small reflecting the insignificance of the small amount in the current world.

Coming to what I did that year, well I was Kota, Rajasthan away from my home here in Mumbai for 2 years from ’08 – ’10. Memories good and bad. Actually this day that year, worse. I remember being end of my 11th grade exams and I had my jaws broken in January, had a major surgery and didn’t didn’t eat or heck even brush my teeth for 2 months. Being the heavy eater and drinker I’m was bit weird spending those birthdays (including mine) without having anything and just looking at others doing it. Well that’s all I remember from that time, which was ‘big’. Well then went to 12th grade. And life went on.

B+

Write about what you did last weekend as though you’re a music critic reviewing a new album.

Well actually I already wrote a post on what I did last weekend (twice! sort of) which was awesome. Here is a direct link to that post which is on my other blog. As you can read, it was great, the saturday I mean. Spent the sunday lazing around.

So as a bonus I’ll say about today. In fact I’m glad that this weekend (I mean just saturday yet) was great too. My college festival started yesterday, which is called Iris and this year the theme is Iris ’13 Shuffle, Today was great, well known Bollywood actor (first time in history of my college and the festival) Boman Irani came in the afternoon and it was great. He enacted a bit from his hit movie 3 idiots and even sang the song loved by almost every student in the country Give me some sunshine playing the guitar and gave a motivating yet fun speech. Bit envy all the fuckers of the committee behind the fest for getting to take pictures with him and especially those who escorted him and spoke with him. Well not that much as I had my share too and still waiting to meet those who I actually love 😉

And the other best part was my college was the venue for the qualifying RAW Street B-boying battle of Mumbai by the Indian B-boying Federation. There were 64 B-boys (actually 63 guys and one b-girl)  battling and it was simple awesome. Being a fan of b-boying I enjoyed as hell. Not that I can do it even a bit, but I (along with most of the crowd)  were astonished by many things, most  being the skill performed/showed by the participants, a huge guy who had more fat than all the rest who showed off cuts and muscles (well apart from the average and skinny ones) reaching the top 16 and till a high spot, which showed size doesn’t matter, only dedication does. And the cherry of the cake, the youngest b-boyer who wouldn’t have been over 12 years old, not only was the most cheered of the day but ended up wining in the finals and the city qualifiers! That showed age doesn’t matter too. Well personally I (along with some of the remaining intellectuals left) felt the other finalist should have won, I was personally rooting for him and he did a great job too, he was practically in the air all the time showcasing awesome skills. Well the kid did have incredible talent no doubt, but well since he was a kid he got most of the support (or as I put it sympathy vote) and in the final he pulled off a move by pulling a chair, squeezing inside it and performing the same steps, and that won everyone’s heart, it was like in your face to the other guy. Well in the end glad for him, good to show support for upcoming generation and the art form itself.

And the day ended with a DJ party. Very tired coming home after a great day. I didn’t take any pictures or anything as I don’t have anything substantial with me for now, and I’m like on a break now sort of.

I guess like last weekend tomorrow will be another boring sunday, I just hope not.
