Most of us have heard the saying, “That’s the best thing since sliced bread!” What do you think is actually the best thing since sliced bread?

Alright, quite honestly, this is the first time I’m reading this phrase, prior to this daily prompt I never knew about it. Another reason to love this community, learning something new everyday. Funny as I don’t recall reading it anywhere nor seeing it in a movie or television. Perhaps it’s fame didn’t go beyond US or I really live in the dark realm.

Either ways, I did the first thing which one might do, googled (yes that’s really a modern word) it. Courtesy of the other best friend wiki, sliced bread was first sold in 1928, advertised as “the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped”. Otto Frederick Rohwedder of Davenport, Iowa, USA; invented the first loaf-at-a-time bread-slicing machine (A prototype he built in 1912 was destroyed in a fire and it was not until 1928 that Rohwedder had a fully working machine ready). This led to the popular phrase, “the greatest thing since sliced bread“.

The ungodly technological advancement. Ranging from what the military and rocket scientists to the common consumer use. Internet. Connecting with people and things (no Nokia pun intended). I could go on. Hard to point towards just one.

And since we spoke about sliced bread and in my mind food floating making me hungry, speaking about food I would have said Pizza, but well that existed about a millennium before sliced bread. Although the word “pizza“ was documented the first time in 977 in Gaeta and successively in different parts of Central and South Italy, which now the world famously recognizes it as an Italian dish, the history of the dish itself is not very clear or well documented. There are indications that it originated in Greece much before that.

Well that just means, for me ‘the best thing after sliced bread’ actually was invented millennia before that, which is Pizza 😀
